Opening Convocation: Welcome Class of 2014!

Today was the first day of classes at Brown and an INSANE day with everyone stopping in to say hello, sitting in on two classes (for fun—geek alert!), and several meetings.  A long-time Brown tradition is the Opening Convocation, where the new students march onto campus through the Van Wickle Gates (top left).  The gates are only opened twice a year—at Convocation and at Commencement, when the graduates are let back out down College St. through the gates.  Neat, eh?

At both Convocation and Commencement, there are also banners, faculty in regalia, and BAGPIPES.  It was over 90 degrees and I got stung by a bee, so I didn’t stick around too long, but here are some photos from the event.
